Lecture: BS 3015, MWF 12:00-1:15pm
(Section 11372) Instructor: Daniel Ramras, Assistant
Professor, IUPUI Dept. of Mathematical Sciences Office Hours: LD 247, M 10:30-11:30, W
4:30-5:30, or by appointment. Contact information: Please contact me by
e-mail at dramras@iupui.edu, or by phone at (317)
278-4133. Please
do not contact me through Canvas (or Oncourse)
as I will be significantly slower to respond. All
e-mails regarding the course should be sent from
IUPUI email accounts (or other IU accounts). Course Description: 4 credits. This is the first
course in a 4-course sequence for Math, Science, and
Engineering majors (MATH 16500 16600 17100 26100. This
course is equivalent to IU MATH M216. Topics include
transcendental functions, techniques of integration,
indeterminate forms and improper integrals, polar
coordinates, sequences, infinite series, and power
series. MATH 16600 Prerequisites: A
grade of C or better in MATH 16500. If you received
a grade of C- or lower in Math 16500, you will
automatically be dropped from this course. MATH 16600 Co-Requisites: MATH
17100 (to be taken with MATH 16500 or 16600). MATH 17100 is also a prerequisite for
MATH 26100. Textbook: Calculus,
7th Edition, by James Stewart, Thompson Publishing
Co. ISBN: 978-0-538-49781-7. Chapters 6, 7, 8,
10, and 11 will be covered. Expectations: As a full-time student,
you should devote at least 40 hours a week to your
studies. If
you are take 4 or 5 courses, this means 8-10 hours
per week per course.
We meet 4 hours per week, so I expect that
you will spend at least 4-6
hours per week outside class studying. This time
can be spent reading the text, working on homework,
attending office hours and/or the Math Assistance
Center, and studying for exams.
Course format: The sections of the text
covered in each class may be found on the course
calendar below. The lecture portion of the class
will assume students have read the
assigned material beforehand, and students
should come to class with questions about the
assigned reading.
If you
do not read the text before class, it will be much
harder to follow the lectures. Succeeding in Calculus: To succeed in calculus, doing
the assigned homework problems is crucial. Watching
another person solve problems is not a substitute
for doing them yourself. Attempt the homework
problems on your own first, and try to write clear,
complete solutions as you would on an exam. Only
after that point should you look to others
(students, the instructor, or the Math Assistance
Center) for help. It is important to look for help with the problems you find difficult. Working in groups with other students is highly recommended (but again, try the problems yourself first), and you should also take advantage of office hours (listed above) and the Math Assistance Center located in Taylor Hall (UC), Room B001 (http://mac.iupui.edu/). Attendance: Students are expected to
attend all lectures and to remain for the full class
period. Please
do not use
electronic devices during class, except for
note-taking or viewing electronic copies of the
text.
-Quizzes (20%),
-Mid-semester exams (50%)
-Departmental final exam (30%) Failing or not taking
the final exam will result in an automatic
course grade of F.
-90% or better guarantees a grade of A- or
above
-80% or better guarantees a grade of B- or
above
-70% or better guarantees a grade of C- or
above
-60% or better guarantees a grade of D- or
above Mid-semester Exams: There will be three in-class exams.
-Exam 1 (covering Chapter 6) will be held
Wed. 2/4
(counts for 15% of the course grade)
-Exam 2 (covering Chapters 7 and 8) will be
held Wed. 3/4
(counts for 15% of the course grade)
-Exam 3 (covering Chapters 10 and 11) will be
held Fri. 4/24
(counts for 20% of the course grade) Departmental Final Exam: All students must take the Departmental Final Exam on Saturday, May 2, from 3:30 - 5:30 PM, room TBD. You must pass the final exam in order to pass the course. Make-up Policy: Make-up exams must be
arranged well in advance, except in emergency
situations, and must be taken
before the exams are returned. Make-up quizzes
will generally not be given, but the lowest quiz
grade will be dropped. Course Announcements
and e-mail: Some course announcements
may be made through Canvas and by e-mail. It is
important that you check your IUPUI e-mail account
regularly, or forward it to another address. Campus-Wide Policies Governing the Conduct of Courses at IUPUI: These can be found at http://registrar.iupui.edu/course_policies.html
FLAGs Early
Student Performance Alert: http://registrar.iupui.edu/flag_eas.html The FLAGS System provides real-time feedback on your performance in this course. Periodically throughout the semester I will be entering data on factors such as your class attendance, participation, and success with coursework, among other things. This information will provide feedback on how you are faring in the course and offer you suggestions on how you might be able to improve your performance. You will be able to access this information in the student center: Onestart > Student Services page > Student Center > My Academics and Grades > My Grades. Withdrawal: I hope that you will not
need to withdraw from this course, but if you do, be
sure to process all paperwork by the appropriate
deadlines outlined in the following table. For
further information see the academic calendar: http://registrar.iupui.edu/accal.html
*After
April 17, course instructors cannot sign a drop
slip. The student must see the Associate Chair of
the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The
School of Science Dean's Office will not endorse a
withdrawal after April 17th unless an extremely
serious and documentable excuse is established. Administrative
Withdrawal Policy: http://registrar.iupui.edu/withdrawal-policy.html You are expected participate in all class meetings and conscientiously complete all required course activities and/or assignments. Keep in touch with me if you are unable to attend, participate, or complete an assignment on time. If you miss more than half of the required activities within the first 25% of the course without contacting me, you will be administratively withdrawn from this course. Administrative withdrawal may have academic, financial, and financial aid implications. If you are administratively withdrawn from the course you will not be eligible for a tuition refund. Contact me if you have questions this policy. Course Schedule: (tentative)
*Room
to
be announced. Due
to
the mini-marathon,
